Later, as Benjamin continues to grow younger, he spends time with Captain Mike (Jared Harris) aboard a tugboat and learns the true meaning of life and how he has been able to view life from his own unique perspective. The film won three Academy Awards and was nominated for 10 others which included Best Picture, Actor (Pitt), Supporting Actress (Taraji P. Henson for her role as Queenie), and Director.

Petey forms a friendship with program director Dewey Hughes (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who had offered him the job while visiting his own brother (Mike Epps) at Petey's prison. Dewey runs interference for Petey when dealing with station owner E.G. Sonderling (Martin Sheen) who is often dismayed by Petey's anti-establishment comments. But Petey plays a key role instilling hope in a generation of listeners as he addresses the Black community during the turbulence of the anti-Vietnam War and pro-Civil Rights era.
