This film is based on Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, which was a thinly veiled depiction of Louisiana Governor Huey Long's rise and fall in politics. This "governor of the people" is Willie Stark (Sean Penn) who begins his career as an idealist but uses corruption to obtain his goals. Stark's methods lead to his eventual downfall.

To show how bad off he is, he plays a game of Russian Roulette after each killing to reinforce in his mind that he is doing right. Things heat up when a Nazi hunter enters the picture. Creepy.

When Luke tells Dr. Squires that he is depressed, Dr. Squires tells him to go out with a girl, get high, and have sex. What Dr. Squires does not know is that Luke has a crush on Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby) who just happens to be Dr. Squires' daughter.
