  Each performer in this film has dual roles: one in modern times and the other in the past. The story begins in the early 1900s in New Orleans' red-light district and then covers the characters' reincarnations many years later. His wife, Rebecca (Cicely Tyson), manages to keep the family together until Nathan's return. Academy Award nominations were received for Best Picture, Actor (Winfield) and Actress (Tyson).
