This film of the 1979 Tony Award-winning play involves the barber Benjamin Barker who assumes the name of Sweeney Todd (George Hearn). He comes home after serving 15 years in prison and vows revenge against the evil Judge Turpin (Edmund Lyndeck) who sent him away. Not only did Turpin rape Todd's wife, which caused her to commit suicide; now he has adopted Todd's daughter Johanna (Betsy Joslyn). Todd puts his plan into action: as a barber he will cut more than Todd's and other customers' hair, and then Mrs. Lovett (Angela Lansbury) will bake his victims in her meat pies.

Set in London during the 1800s, this story begins with a barber, Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp), who is sent away to Australia on trumped up charges by Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) who has plans to steal Benjamin's wife Lucy (Laura Michelle Kelly) and baby daughter Johanna. But, Lucy commits suicide, and Judge Turpin spends the next 15 years raising Johanna (Jayne Wisener). Now, Benjamin escapes, returns to London–disguised as Sweeney Todd–and is determined to avenge himself and be reunited with Johanna. He opens a barber shop above Mrs. Lovett's (Helena Bonham Carter) sidewalk restaurant and begins an affair with her. But the real purpose in Sweeney Todd's life is his revenge as he slits the throats of his barber shop clients, and their bodies are ground into meat to provide the staple for Mrs. Lovett's irresistible meat pies. The film received an Academy Award for Best Art Direction; two other nominations included Best Actor (Johnny Depp).
