As if the Freeling family–father Steve (Craig T. Nelson), mother Diane (JoBeth Williams), daughter Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke), and son Robbie (Oliver Robins)–had not suffered enough with their poltergeists in the first movie, they are back again. Following Grandma's death, the toy telephone rings, and who should be on the other end but the "other side." Now the family is visited by the evil spirit of cult leader Henry Kane (Julian Beck), and, once again, they contact psychic medium Tangina Barrons (Zelda Rubinstein) for help. As in the first film, the special effects are excellent.

When Jack comes home on furlough, he discovers that Kay has been unfaithful. Then, Lucky has an affair with Hazel, which causes big problems between the women. Lahti was nominated for the Oscar's Best Supporting Actress.
