Jacob (Mads Mikkelsen) runs an orphanage in India, but the orphanage is threatened by closure. Hope comes in the form of four million dollars offered by Danish Businessman Jorgen (Rolf Lassgard) if Jacob will come to Denmark. Jacob takes the trip to Copenhagen and meets with Jorgen who now wants to discuss the financing at his daughter Anna's (Stine Fischer Christensen) wedding the next day. At the wedding, Jacob and Jorgen's wife Helene (Sidse Babett Knudsen) appear to have a connection, but it is not until the wedding toast that past, present, and future come together. An Oscar nomination was received for Best Foreign Language Film.

Audrey needs someone to turn to and invites Jerry to move in with her and her children (Alexis Llewellyn and Micah Berry). Jerry bonds with the family, and, despite their differences, Jerry and Audrey develop a mutual dependency on each other.
