Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep) serves as principal at a Catholic middle school where her domineering attitude clashes with popular Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Sister Aloysius becomes suspicious of Father Flynn after he delivers a sermon on the power of "doubt" and asks one of her teachers, Sister James (Amy Adams), to advise her of any strange behavior. Sister James reports that the school's only Black student, Donald Miller (Joseph Foster), smelled like alcohol after visiting Father Flynn. Now, Sister Aloysius sets out to rid the school of Father Flynn's influence and, in the process, nearly tears the community apart. The film received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress (Streep), Supporting Actor (Hoffman), and both Amy Adams and Viola Davis (for her role as Donald Miller's mother) for Supporting Actress.
