Margot has her teenage son Claude (Zane Pais) with her, but husband Jim (John Turturro) is not by her side because Margot is in the process of dumping him. Margot makes no pretense of hiding the fact that she does not like anything nor anyone connected with Pauline's wedding. The sisters argue, past secrets are revealed, and resulting tensions threaten Pauline's relationship with her fiance Malcolm (Jack Black). As family relationships deteriorate, will the sisters find anything to bring about a peaceful solution to their problems?

Holly (Hilary Swank) and her Irish husband Gerry (Gerard Butler) love each other but spend much of their time embroiled in arguments. Gerry dies suddenly, and Holly is left alone and miserable holed up in her apartment. Then comes Holly's 30th birthday, and her friends throw her a surprise birthday party, during which a cake with a mysterious message from Gerry arrives on the scene. Before he died, Gerry had written messages to Holly showing her the way to get back in life. Although Holly's mother (Kathy Bates) and her best friends (Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon) worry about the notes, those notes–signed "P.S. I love you."–are the very things that bring Holly out of her doldrums.
