  Melody Jones (Gary Cooper) and his sidekick George Fury (William Demarest) ride into the town of Payneville where Melody is mistaken for highway robber Monte Jarrad (Dan Duryea). A gunman shoots at Melody, but Monte Jarrad's girlfriend Cherry de Longpre (Loretta Young) saves Melody and takes him home to her ranch. Melody falls in love with Cherry, and, as a result, he is chased not only by the law but also by Jarrad.
