This film by Joel and Ethan Coen is based on actual events that took place in Fargo, ND. Car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) plots to have his wife (Kristin Rudrud) kidnapped so he can collect the ransom from his wealthy father-in-law (Harve Presnell). Frances McDormand won an Oscar as Best Actress for her role as the pregnant policewoman. An Oscar also went to the Coens for Writing, and five other nominations were received, including Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actor (William H. Macy).

Finally, a film is made that attempts to show the Native American perspective of their U.S. government-ordered resettlement to reservations in Arizona during the 1800s. Geronimo (Wes Studi) and a small band of warriors escape from the reservation, and General George Crook (Gene Hackman) does try, unsuccessfully, to bring Geronimo back to the reservation. Finally, after five years of eluding capture, Lt. Britton Davis (Matt Damon) and Lt. Gatewood (Jason Patric) convince Geronimo to surrender. But, when all is said and done, all involved share a respect for Geronimo.

In this remake of the 1974 film about prisoners who square off against their guards in a game of football, Burt Reynolds is cast in the role of Coach Nate Scarborough, while Adam Sandler takes on the Burt Reynolds' old role of the former NFL pro, now prisoner, Paul "Wrecking" Crewe. Warden Hazen (James Cromwell) makes a deal with Crewe to help his prison guard team win the league championship. Crewe suggests that he train a team of convicts to play against the guards in a game that Hazen assumes will be an easy win for his team of guards. But, as Crewe and fellow prisoner Caretaker (Chris Rock) begin working with their team of convicts, Crewe decides to go for the win.
