Judy Holliday recreates her Broadway role of Manhattan telephone operator Ella Peterson who works for an answering service run by her cousin, Sue (Jean Stapleton). Ella gets involved with her clients and, while on the phone with playwright Jeffrey Moss (Dean Martin), Ella falls in love with him. Problems develop because Ella will not reveal her true identity, but Moss and other clients appear together at Ella's doorstep, and all ends happily. The songs include "Just in Time" and "The Party's Over." The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.

After Tony interviews Kit Forrest (Raquel Welch), her neighbor Al Munger (Martin Gabel) warns Tony to stay away from her. The plot thickens when Tony learns that Al was once a rackets boss and that Al's son Paul (Steve Peck) and Gronsky are stealing from Al. Fearing that Kit may be in trouble, Tony arrives at her home in time to catch the villain and then heads off on a scuba diving trip with Kit.

His businessman brother Frank (Arthur Kennedy) introduces Dave to schoolteacher Gwen French (Martha Hyer), but, when Dave won't break his ties to local gambler Bama Dillert (Dean Martin) and floozy Ginny Moorehead (Shirley MacLaine), tragedy lies ahead. Academy Award nominations were received for Best Actress (MacLaine), Supporting Actor (Kennedy), and Supporting Actress (Hyer).
