William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas) is laid off from his job and ends up in a traffic jam on his way to his daughter's birthday party. He abandons his car and walks to a convenience store, which he demolishes with a baseball bat because the clerk is less than helpful. Next, 'D-Fens' attacks a gang that unsuccessfully retaliates, and 'D-Fens' steals their guns. Now, it is the mission of Detective Martin Prendergast (Robert Duvall) to hunt down 'D-Fens' and stop the terror that he is wreaking on the streets of Los Angeles.

One solution: memorize his speech and then perform it to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
