  Diane Arbus (Nicole Kidman) made a name for herself as a visionary photographer. This fictionalized account of her life begins when she was an assistant to her successful photographer husband (Ty Burrell). Diane found her own niche in the photography world when she met an upstairs neighbor, Lionel Sweeney (Robert Downey Jr.), who was covered from head to foot with hair and had previously been a circus freak. Lionel introduces her to his world of freaks–and more.

  Based on Jim Thompson's "A Swell Looking Babe," this is the story of a hapless bellhop, Sonny (Elias Koteas), whose home life is just as miserable as what he endures at the two-star Stillwell Hotel. One night he agrees to join his friend Del (Bruce Ramsay) in a plot to rob the safe, which holds $500,000 for an illegal poker game. Of course, the best-laid plans go awry and result in only adding to Sonny's grief.

  Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has been released after a short stay at a sanitarium but still practices masochistic behavior, inflicting pain on herself when she encounters her drunken father (Stephen McHattie). Her overprotective mother (Leslie Ann Warren) has encouraged Lee to gain secretarial skills, and now Lee is hired as a secretary in the office of Florida attorney F. Edward Grey (James Spader). Grey often criticizes Lee, and Lee, in turn, thrives on his mental and physical abuse. Even after being fired, Lee plots to get her job–and Grey–back.
