Cast: Barbra Streisand, Mandy Patinkin, Amy Irving, Nehemiah Persoff, Steven Hill, David de Keyser, Ruth Goring, Miriam Margolyes, Allan Corduner, David de Keyser, Bernard Spear, Anna Tzelniker, Doreen Mantle, Lynda Baron, Jack Lynn

Barbra Streisand produced, directed, starred in, and co-wrote this musical, which is set in Eastern Europe at the turn of the 20th century. Yentl (Streisand) wants to study the Torah, but her religion forbids women from becoming Talmudic scholars. Her solution is to pretend to be a man in order to attend a Yeshiva (Jewish school for priests). She calls herself "Ansel," is accepted as a student, and then falls in love with fellow student Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin). Problems lie ahead because Avigdor is not aware that "Ansel" is a woman, and he is engaged to Hadass (Amy Irving) who just happens to become romantically interested in "Ansel." The film won an Academy Award for its musical score, and Irving was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. A must for Streisand fans.
