Ritter boards the airship and follows leads that include his ex-lover Ursula (Anne Bancroft), businessman Edward Douglas (Gig Young), suspicious crew members, and the captains Pruss (Charles Durning) and Lehmann (Richard Dysart). Ritter believes that a sabotage is planned and tries to get the blimp landed and the passengers out of danger. But, the Hindenburg explodes over New Jersey, and 36 people are killed.
