As a boy, Pitka (Mike Myers) had lived with his missionary parents in India but was orphaned and left to be raised by Guru Tugginmypuddah (Ben Kingsley) to become a self-help guru. Of course, the only reason Guru Pitka wanted to become a guru was to meet girls–a fact that provoked Guru Tugginmypuddah to slap a chastity belt on him. Now, Pitka's greatest ambition is to appear on the Oprah show, and he finds the chance when a call comes from Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba), the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. It seems that their star player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) had been cheating on his wife Prudence (Meagan Good), and she has left him for the King's goalie Jacques "Le Coq" Grande (Justin Timberlake). Obviously, this has had an effect on the team, but if Guru Pitka can help Darren win back Prudence, the Maple Leafs may just find the chance to win the Stanley Cup. Even more important to Guru Pitka, he will probably get his chance to appear on the Oprah show after accomplishing his task.

This 3-D animated adventure begins with bride Susan Murphy ( voice of Reese Witherspsoon) preparing for her wedding to TV weatherman Derek Dietl (voice of Paul Rudd). Military helicopters arrive on the scene, swoop her up, and deliver her to a government prison for monsters. Susan is given the new name of Ginormica (voice of Witherspoon), and is welcomed by the other imprisoned monsters–insect-headed Dr. Cockroach (voice of Hugh Laurie), blobish B.O.B. (voice of Seth Rogen), and half-human/half-fish Missing Link (voice of Will Arnett)–welcome her. Susan is doomed to spend her life in the prison–until an evil alien, Galaxhar (voice of Rainn Wilson), threatens to conquer Earth. Now, Gen. W.R. Monger (voice of Kiefer Sutherland) convinces the President (voice of Stephen Colbert) to promise the monsters their freedom if they can defeat Galaxhar and his army of clones and robots.
