  Thirty-year-old schoolteacher Poppy (Sally Hawkins) enjoys a life filled with optimistic expectations. She lives with fellow teacher Zoe (Alexis Zegerman) whose outlook on life counterbalances that of Poppy. One day, Poppy decides to take driving lessons, and, despite her instructor Scott's (Eddie Marsan) verbal abuse, Poppy continues her lessons with him. When she goes to a dance class with colleague Heather (Sylvestra Le Touzel), Poppy connects with school social worker Tim (Samuel Roukin), and they are attracted to each other–which leads to a jealous Scott's confrontation with Poppy.

  Wealthy real-estate developer Liam O'Leary (Brendan Gleeson) discovers that he was adopted when he meets the down-and-out twin brother (also played by Gleeson) he never knew existed. The brother lures Liam out of the city and begins to take over his identity. In the process, the twin takes over Liam's business and even his wife Jane (Kim Cattrall). Now their positions are reversed. Liam is penniless while it is the evil twin who now appears to have it all.
