During 1939, Janusz (Jim Sturgess) has been sentenced to a remote Soviet Union labor camp and wants to get back to his wife who has deserted him. He leads a small group of prisoners–including American engineer Mr. Smith (Ed Harris) and Russian Valka (Colin Farrell)–in an escape from the Soviet Gulag and, with little supplies, they set off on a dangerous journey through icy forests and dry deserts. Along their thousands of miles trek, a young Polish girl, Irena (Saoirse Ronan), begs to join them and, with time, becomes a valued member of the group.
