  This spaghetti Western begins with El Chuncho (Gian Maria Volonte) and his bandits robbing a train to get weapons for the Mexican revolutionary forces. American Bill Tate (Lou Castel) is on the train and helps the cause–wanting to get into the good graces of the revolutionaries–in order to assassinate the leaders.

  City leaders, led by Stengel (Franco Ressel) hire robbers to steal money from an Army safe and plan to use the money to buy land in order to build a railroad. The robbers get the money, but Stengel doesn't want to share the loot, so he offers a reward for the capture of the robbers. Sabata (Lee Van Cleef) rides into town, tracks down the robbers, and collects the reward. Then he realizes that Stengel was behind the theft and attempts to blackmail him, which leads Stengel to hire assassins to kill Sabata. But, Sabata outwits them, kills Stengel, and rides out of town. This spaghetti Western spawned two sequels, "Adios, Sabata" and "The Return of Sabata."
