The children–Judith (Heather Matarazzo) and Wesley (Zach Braff)–serve to link the stories together as they tell two tales, which mesh into the original story of their unusual lives.

His escape is in writing poetry and eventually getting his life together. Inspired by Paul Devlin's "SlamNation," a documentary about poetry slams (competition) filmed earlier the same year.
