Soldier of fortune Joe January (John Wayne) leads Bonnard (Rossano Brazzi) and prostitute Dita (Sophia Loren) on a journey across the Sahara Desert in search of a treasure in jewels that was left hidden in the sand by Bonnard's religious father. They reach their destination and find the skeletal remains of Bonnard's father. After learning that his father wasn't the good man Bonnard believed him to be, Bonnard takes off with the jewels and abandons Joe and Dita. But, they survive and even fall in love, which is a much better ending to the journey than what Bonnard will be experiencing.

Fowler retaliates, and the American ends up as a pawn whose fate is sealed when Fowler tells the Communists that the American is selling arms to their enemy.
