This film involves the final months in Trotsky's life and shows how Jacson, with help from his girlfriend Gita Samuels (Romy Schneider)–who just happens to be one of Trotsky's secretaries–manages to get close enough to Trotsky to kill him.

  Police inspector Edouard Coleman (Alain Delon) has a friend, Simon (Richard Crenna), who owns a small nightclub in Paris. But, unbeknownst to Coleman, Simon also leads a gang of bank robbers. As if that were not enough, both men are having an affair with the same woman, Cathy (Catherine Deneuve). As Coleman begins putting the pieces together, matters grow more and more tense.
