In this, Sophia Loren's first British film, she plays Stella, a kept woman, whose apartment key is being passed from one tug boat captain to the next one who arrives in Plymouth, England during World War II. Tug boat captain David Ross (William Holden) arrives in port and meets his friend, British tug boat captain Chris Ford (Trevor Howard), who takes him to Stella's apartment. Chris gives David her key, and, when Chris is killed in combat, David moves in with Stella. They fall in love, but, when David believes that he will be killed, he passes the key on to tug boat captain Kane (Kieron Moore). David survives and rushes to the apartment where Kane tells him that Stella has left for London, and David races off to find her.
