Young Arnie (Jerry Mathers) discovers the corpse of Harry in a Vermont woods. He goes home and tells his mother (Shirley MacLaine) who recognizes Harry as her ex-husband and thinks she is responsible because she hit him with a bottle. Meanwhile, a hunter (Edmund Gwenn), also spots Harry and thinks he shot him while hunting. Others also believe they are the ones who are responsible for his death. To ensure that the authorities do not discover the body, the villagers get together and bury Harry. The trouble with Harry is that he is a corpse that just does not stay buried, and his body keeps popping up around town. Alfred Hitchcock, in a change for him, shows comic genius in directing this comedy. The film marks Shirley MacLaine's film debut.

The nominations included: Best Picture, Actress (two nominations), Director, Supporting Actor (Mikhail Baryshnikov), and Supporting Actress (Leslie Browne).

| | interesting | moviebuff 06/17/2009 | | Slow action, not a block buster but it says more about Robert Mitchum and Shirley MacLaine and their abilities to both build and then sustain a character in this movie. When I stumbled on this movie I already knew about the lead character's so I did not expect much from this black and white. They seem to rescue what may have been a dull and almost boring movie. It took me away for about two hours, and no I wouldn't suggest that anyone must see this movie. It is what it is and the presence of Mitchum and MacLaine make this an experience that adds to my life. |

This is a clever film made up of a trio of stories linking together subsequent owners of a particular yellow Rolls-Royce Phantom II. Later, in the 1930s, gangster Paolo Maltese (George C. Scott) buys the Rolls and tours Italy with hat-check girl Mae Jenkins (Shirley MacLaine). Like her predecessor, Mae also tries out the back seat–she finds "love" with a photographer (Alain Delon) while Paolo is in the U.S. on business. By World War II, socialite Gerda Millett (Ingrid Bergman) owns the car and fights the Nazis by smuggling Davich (Omar Sharif) across the border. In the process, this couple also finds pleasures in the back seat of the Rolls-Royce Phantom II.
