While serving as an American bomber pilot during World War II, David Halloran (Harrison Ford) is in England where he meets and falls in love with Margaret Sellinger (Lesley-Anne Down) during an air raid. Margaret keeps the fact that she is married a secret. Later, David goes on a mission with British secret service agent Paul (Christopher Plummer)–who just happens to be Margaret's husband. After their plane is shot down over France, David realizes that Paul's wife is Margaret, but they must work together if they are going to find the means for survival.

Winston Churchill was out of power and was a lone voice trying to warn the population and leadership of the threat posed by Hitler's re-arming of Germany. He returned to power after his warnings were proven to be valid.
