This story is based on the true story of an American, Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field), who was married to an Iranian (Alfred Molina) and went on a family vacation to Iran to introduce their daughter (Sheila Rosenthal) to her paternal relatives. Once there, Betty found herself a prisoner in the family home; it took 18 months for her to organize a successful escape over the Turkish border.
