They participate in a kite-fighting competition, and, with Hassan's help, Amir wins. But, while retrieving an opponent's kite, Hassan is cornered by a racist bully and is assaulted. Amir does nothing to help his friend and is so ashamed of his lack of action that he tells a lie that results in Hassan and his family being driven out of the household. Soon after, Amir and his family flee to the United States before the Soviet takeover of Afghanistan. Now, in 2000, Amir (now played by Khalid Abdalla) gets a call asking him to return to Afghanistan to help find Hassan's child who is being held by the Taliban. Amir returns and, given the chance to atone for his past mistake, sets out to rescue Hassan's child. An Academy Award nomination was received for Best Original Musical Score.
