The epic tale of Genghis Khan and his rise to power begins during flashbacks to the nine-year-old Temudgin (Odnyam Odsuren) choosing his future bride Borte (Bayertsetseg Erdenabat), his father's (Ba Sen) fatal poisoning, and Temudgin becoming a fugitive after the family loses its property. The story moves on to the adult life of Temudgen, a.k.a. Genghis Khan (now played by Tedanobu Asano) who, with the support of his courageous wife Borte (Khulan Chuluun), uses his strong will and sense of justice to fight for unity among the Mongols. An Academy Award nomination was received for Best Foreign Language Film.

Meanwhile, his life without women changes when an exterminator (Jennifer Jason Leigh) arrives for a service call at his home. His life also takes a turn when he realizes that someone is out to get him.

During 1944, while a cargo of work horses is aboard a ship headed to Africa, one of the mares gives birth to a foal, Lucky (Lucky's thoughts are narrated by Lukas Haas). When their ship docks, Lucky is separated from his mother and must go on without her. After a long train ride, the horses arrive in a mining town, and Lucky is adopted by orphaned stable boy Richard (Chase Moore). When the town's residents are forced to escape from enemy fire, Lucky is abandoned by Richard. Lucky flees into the nearby desert where he meets other animals and a young Bushman girl Nyka (Maria Geelbooi) who teach him lessons in how to survive in the wild environment.
