In the mid-80s, East German Secret Police agent Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe) is assigned to spy on Dreyman and Sieland. In the process of his observations, the hard-nosed Wiesler becomes fascinated with the couple and turns into an anti-establishment figure himself. By story's end it is 1991, and the Berlin Wall has fallen allowing for a reunited Germany. An Oscar was received for Best Foreign Language film.

But, the project grows to an enormous tunnel to accommodate many others who want to escape the East German regime. Based on a true story.
