  In this film version of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem, set during the 1854 Crimean War, Major Geoffrey Vickers (Errol Flynn) vows revenge on the Indian potentate Surat Khan (C. Henry Gordon) after witnessing a slaughter of British citizens at a British fort commanded by Col. Campbell (Donald Crisp). Meanwhile, Geoffrey and his brother Perry (Patric Knowles), who is also a soldier, are both in love with Campbell's daughter Elsa (Olivia de Havilland), but it is Perry who wins her heart. Now, Geoffrey leads his Light Brigade into a fight to the death against the Russian soldiers who are providing supplies to Surat Khan.

His life has been filled with misadventures, romantic infidelities, and even one true love who was Martha (Gene Tierney)–his wife of 25 years. After relating his story, His Excellency tells Henry that his only sin was living life to the fullest and that he is not welcome in Hades. He takes Henry to the elevator and tells him that it may be difficult to get through the Pearly Gates but that if he succeeds he will join Martha. An excellent film based on Ladislaus Bus-Fekete's play, "Birthdays." Oscar nominations were received for Best Picture and Director.
