After returning home at war's end, disabled ex-soldier Joe Parkson (Robert Ryan) tracks down prison-camp informer Frank R. Enley (Van Heflin), Joe's former commanding officer, to avenge the death of his buddies. Frank learns that Joe is looking for him, and he tells his wife Edith (Janet Leigh) that Joe is mentally ill and then leaves for Los Angeles for a convention. Joe contacts Edith and tells her that Frank is responsible for many deaths, and she follows Frank to Los Angeles to warn him–with Joe close on her heels.
