  Filled with low self-esteem, Roger (Jon Heder) is not happy with his job as a NYC meter reader and enrolls in a confidence-building class led by Dr. P (Billy Bob Thornton). Roger does gain confidence and even gains the courage to pursue Amanda (Jacinda Barrett) who is the girl of his dreams. But problems rise to the fore when the dastardly Dr. P decides to compete for Amanda's affections.

  Failed rocker Dewey Finn (Jack Black) is kicked out of his band. Needing employment, Dewey pretends to be his roommate, Ned Schneebly (Mike White), and takes a job as a substitute teacher at an elite elementary school. Lacking a lesson plan, Dewey discovers that he has students with musical talents, and, to the consternation of the school's uptight Principal Rosalie Mullins (Joan Cusack), Dewey grooms his students as members of a rock band. Dewey's goal is to beat his former band in competition at the "Battle of the Bands" and make a name for themselves in the show business world.
