  This version of "The Big Sleep" features Robert Mitchum in the role of private detective Philip Marlowe, and the setting is now in London during the 1970s. Marlowe is hired by elderly General Sternwood (James Stewart) to investigate a blackmail attempt. In the process, Marlowe becomes involved with Sternwood's daughters (Sarah Miles and Candy Clark), and, before the case is solved, several murders take place.

  This is a good remake of the Charles Dickens' classic concerning the orphan, Pip (Simon Gipps-Kent as young Pip and Michael York as older Pip), and his unknown benefactor. While growing up with his foster parents, blacksmith Joe Gargery and his wife (Joss Ackland and Rachel Roberts), Pip befriends convict Magwitch (James Mason) and comes to his aid. Later, Pip falls in love with his childhood friend Estella (Sarah Miles) who is the ward of the bitter Miss Havisham (Margaret Leighton) and has been taught to have different expectations about life than those of Pip. When Pip gains wealth through a mysterious benefactor who, it turns out, is Magwitch repaying Pip for his friendship, he does well in the Victorian world of the social elite.
