This story takes place in 1950s' Baltimore where 12-year-old Danny Hines (Gregory Smith) dreams of climbing a 203-foot radio tower. Danny's father Earl (David Strathairn) has a reputation of being a coward because he did not serve in the military, and Danny believes that climbing the tower will prove that someone in the family does have courage. Unexpected help comes from ill-tempered, dying neighbor Chuck Langer (John Hurt) who has suggestions for how Danny can succeed in climbing the tower.
