Bobbie Gentry sings her theme song in this film based on the true story about a 1954 Georgia murder in which redneck Deputy Sheriff Reed Morgan (Max Baer Jr.) mistakenly believes that brothers Chris and Wayne Dixon (Alan Vint and Jesse Vint) raped and murdered his wife. After returning home to the murder scene, Morgan finds the brothers in his barn, claims they are the murderers, and seeks revenge. Too late, he discovers who the real murderers are. He finds Longworth and learns that he is now sheriff in a small town, is married to Maria (Katy Jurado), and has a stepdaughter Louisa (Pina Pellicer). As part of his plot, Rio seduces Louisa. Then, he falls in love with her but continues his criminal life, and complications ensue.

But, their boss, rancher Walter Buckman (Karl Malden), sends his sons John and Paul (Tom Skerritt and Joe Don Baker) with the posse in pursuit, and the flight from justice proves fatal.
