Richard Boyle (James Woods) is a down-on-his-luck photojournalist who joins his disc-jockey friend Dr. Rock (Jim Belushi) on a car trip to El Salvador in 1980 to cover the war. Boyle forms uneasy alliances with both the guerillas and the right-wing military and realizes that the U.S. press is not adequately reporting the situation. Meanwhile, Boyle falls in love with a Salvadorian, Maria (Elpidia Carrillo), and must find the means to get her out of the country alive. This is based on a true story and conveys the excitement of the time. Woods was nominated for an Oscar.
