Doc McCoy (Steve McQueen) has been in prison for four years when his wife Carol (Ali McGraw) gets him a parole from dirty politician Jack Benyon (Ben Johnson). The parole comes with the stipulation that Doc does one more robbery for Benyon. Doc joins up with Rudy (Al Lettieri) and Jackson (Bo Hopkins), and they perform the heist, but problems ensue when Rudy plots to keep all of the money. Now, Doc and Carol rush for the Mexican border with the money while Rudy follows closely behind. They encounter each other in El Paso where a shootout is a certainty.
