This story begins in Russia during 1927 when the father of a young Jewish girl, Fegele (Claudia Lander-Duke), leaves to find a better life for himself in America. Fegele is sent to London where her name is changed to Suzie. Later, a grown-up Suzie (Christina Ricci) joins a cabaret group, travels to Paris, and is taken under the wing of fellow performer Lola (Cate Blanchett). Lola begins an affair with an Italian tenor (John Turturro), while Suzie's interests lie with a Gypsy horse trainer (Johnny Depp). It isn't long before the Nazis take over Paris, and Suzie is again forced to move to safer surroundings.
