Siblings–Keith (Ben Chaplin), Barry (Thomas Cavanagh), Emily (Julianne Nicholson), and Matthew (Glenn Howerton)–come home to visit their dying mother Anita (Sally Field) for what they believe will be a couple of days. When the days drag into two weeks, personality conflicts rise to the fore, and Keith, Barry, Emily, and Matthew struggle to put their differences aside at this life-changing time of their lives.

The plan works, until she goes into labor. Rushed to the hospital, Novalee attains celebrity status, a job, a family, and friends–and a small amount of maturity. Well, it's a start!
