As the story progresses, it becomes apparent that she knows much more than an impostor would about intimate details of Anastasia's life. The question remains, is she really Anastasia? Ingrid Bergman won the Oscar for her role as Anastasia.

The case remains unsolved, and Grau is taken off the case. Two years later, Grau is in Paris when another prostitute is killed. With help from Inspector Morand (Philippe Noiret), Grau obtains evidence that traps the General, but then Grau is killed. The case continues on until 1965 when Morand confronts the General with the evidence, and then the General kills himself.
