  In 1928, a young Parisian woman (Ingrid Bergman) was recruited to impersonate the daughter of Czar Nicholas II. It was rumored that Anastasia had escaped the Bolshevik's execution of Russia's royal family and, if found, was eligible for the inheritance. As the story progresses, it becomes apparent that she knows much more than an impostor would about intimate details of Anastasia's life. The question remains, is she really Anastasia? Ingrid Bergman won the Oscar for her role as Anastasia.

Rose writes to her brother Mark (Leigh McCloskey) in Rome, but, before he can respond, Rose is killed. Mark comes to New York to investigate his sister's murder and, in the process, discovers secret passages within the apartment building and then uncovers the shocking truth about The Three Mothers.

  When Maj. Grau (Omar Sharif) investigates the 1942 murder of a Warsaw prostitute, the evidence points to three German Generals (Donald Pleasence, Charles Gray, and Peter O'Toole). The case remains unsolved, and Grau is taken off the case. Two years later, Grau is in Paris when another prostitute is killed. With help from Inspector Morand (Philippe Noiret), Grau obtains evidence that traps the General, but then Grau is killed. The case continues on until 1965 when Morand confronts the General with the evidence, and then the General kills himself.
