Based on Richard Matheson's "Ride the Nightmare," this action film finds an American, Joe (Charles Bronson), living a peaceful life in France with his wife Fabienne (Liv Ullmann) and stepdaughter Michelle (Yannick Delulle). All goes well–until gang members Captain Ross (James Mason), Katnaga (Jean Topart), Whitey (Michel Constantin), and Faustountil (Luigi Pistilli) reappear in Joe's life and kidnap his family. Their purpose is to force Joe into drug smuggling. In turn, Joe kidnaps Ross' mistress (Jill Ireland), and battles ensue.
