  The last imperial ruler of China, Pu Yi (John Lone), led the most unusual of lives. At three-years old, he was named Emperor and was not allowed to leave Peking. After World War II, the Communists put him in prison for 10 years until his release at which time he became an ordinary citizen serving under Mao Tse Tung. This film won an impressive nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director.

  During World War II, Capt. Yonoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto) runs a Japanese POW camp and views his prisoners as cowards. As a New Zealand officer in the prison camp, Major Jack "Strafer" Celliers (David Bowie) becomes intrigued with the Asian culture, which leads Yonoi to his decision of making Celliers the prisoners Commanding Officer. Meanwhile, his comrades consider Celliers a traitor when he tries to explain to them the Japanese way of thinking, and bilingual prisoner Col. John Lawrence (Tom Conti) continues to treat Sergeant Gengo Hara (Takeshi Kitano) as an adversary.    1 User Review

  Entertaining and revealed that Mr. Bowie can act reasonably well.
