  Covert agent Neil Shaw (Wesley Snipes) comes out of retirement to help his friend Garret (Lochlyn Munro) who is a Senatorial candidate. Dead bodies are showing up, including that of Shaw's mentor Mom (Clifford W. Stewart), and, amidst the chaos, Shaw meets Mom's beautiful daughter Hether (Athena Karkanis). Now, Shaw suspects that he is being set up, and this is his signal to begin his martial arts action. Mayhem ensues as Shaw works against the clock to find out what is really happening.

  As the last members of a 1960s' environmental activist commune, Jack (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his 16-year-old daughter, Rose (Camilla Belle), live peacefully on their abandoned island. But life takes a turn when a developer (Beau Bridges) plans a housing development next to them, and Jack's girlfriend, Kathleen (Catherine Keener)–along with her two sons (Ryan McDonald and Paul Dano)–come to live with them. While Rose is intimidated by the presence of Kathleen and the boys, Jack sees the new housing project as a direct infringement on his efforts to keep the environment pure. The writer and director of this film, Rebecca Miller, is the wife of Daniel Day-Lewis, and his father was playwright Arthur Miller.

  Fifteen-year-old Finn (Anton Yelchan) lives with his mother Liz (Diane Lane) in a grungy apartment in New York where he is looking forward to spending the summer in South America visiting the father he has never met. But, when cocaine-addicted Liz causes major problems and cries out for help, Finn's trip to South America is canceled. Instead of the "perfect" summer with his father, Liz and Finn move into the New Jersey guest cottage on the large farm of mogul Ogden C. Osborne (Donald Sutherland). Now, Liz attends AA meetings, and it is Finn who spends his time getting high and drunk with the Osborne grandchildren, Bryce (Chris Evans) and Maya (Kristen Stewart). But, catastrophe lies ahead after a violent episode that leaves Liz and Finn struggling to maintain their dignity.

  Erik (Josh Hartnett) worked as a sports reporter for the Denver Times but is not regarded highly at the office. His estranged wife Joyce (Kathryn Morris) is an esteemed editor for the same paper, and the new editor-in-chief, Metz (Alan Alda), is not a fan of Erik's work. Erik is concerned about his personal life and tries to be a hero to his six-year-old son Teddy (Dakota Goyo) by making up stories about his relationships with sports heroes. Then one day Erik finds a homeless man (Samuel L. Jackson) stumbling in the alley after a beating. He tells Erik that he is the former boxing champion "Battling" Bob Satterfield. Now Erik has a purpose in life to tell the story of this fallen sports hero, and while dedicating himself to writing an honest story, Erik re-examines his professional and personal lives and improves them both.
