Leonora Eames (Barbara Bel Geddes) is a model who marries millionaire Smith Ohlrig (Robert Ryan) and moves into his luxurious home where boredom and loneliness set in. Leonora gets a job as a receptionist for sympathetic psychiatrist Dr. Quinada (James Mason), she does not tell Quinada that she is married, and they fall in love.
