Claire and Hailey (Emma Roberts and JoJo) are best friends who fear the end of summer when Hailey will be leaving Florida to live in Australia where her marine-biologist mother (Claudia Karvan) has a research grant. In desperation, Claire and Hailey pray to the hurricane god for help, and the next morning their prayers are answered when a huge wave washes mermaid Aquamarine (Sara Paxton) out of the bay and into Claire's swimming pool. Mermaids possess powers to grant wishes, and Aquamarine makes a deal with the girls: if they help her attract a certain good-looking lifeguard (Jake McDorman), she will grant them their wish. The film presents an unusually good story about three senior members of the Australian Department of Radio Physics, Cliff Buxton (Sam Neill), Ross 'Mitch' Mitchell (Kevin Harrington) and Glenn Latham (Tom Long), and their NASA associate, Al Burnett (Patrick Warburton), that monitored this important disk.
