Gregorio (Anthony Quinn) is a domineering, wealthy man who knows that he hasn't many years left. He sells his bakery and decides not to leave any money to two of his grown children since they had not pleased him. Instead, all will go to third son, Pippo (Luigi Proietti), who has stayed with Gregorio's bakery over the years. The lecherous Gregorio is also having an affair with Pippo's wife.
