He wants to sell a family heirloom–a hand-crafted piano–dating to slavery days. He wants to buy farmland in order to be able to work for himself rather than for someone else. But his sister, Berniece (Alfre Woodard), is against the thought of selling the treasure. The family's history of struggle and survival while holding onto their heritage is told through the carvings on the piano.
