Roland Emmerich Strikes Again!1fatts 04/13/2009
It is perfectly justifiable not to like Roland Emmerich movies. He seems to believe that subtlety involves using only a two-ton sledgehammer instead of a ten-ton sledgehammer, when a tack hammer will do.
He does to "the monster movie" in Godzilla what he did to "the alien movie" in Indpendence Day and would later do to "the ecology movie" in The Day After Tomorrow." Good special effects; a plot that comes out of a blender; and dialogue written by a ten-year-old and spoken with deep commitment to the "Omigosh, Batman!" school of acting.
But that's the fun of the thing. If you want more, don't spend the money. If you want to watch things blow up or crash or crack or whatever which make no more demands of your wit or intelligence than a Hardy Boys book, you can have some fun. It's like Jackie Chan movies with better special effects and no sense of humour.

Grandma 2003 03/15/2009
Even though it's Not believable, it's still a good movie! My favorite part was when Cpt. Hiller, played by Will Smith, punched the alien in the face and welcomed him to Earth! Then, there was the part when David finally figured out that the best way to get rid of them was to give them a "cold"! A virus, of all things!!!! Great stuff!

So there are levels of suspending disbelief.
Those aren't real people living through that stuff on the screen. They're actors. We know that. But we suspend disbelief and play along with Clark Gable dissing Vivian Leigh because otherwise we wouldn't enjoy the movie.
But, as I say, there are levels.
Road Runner can't really run into the picture of the train tracks that Wiley Coyote has painted on the rock, and Wiley Coyote can't get run over by the train. We know that too, but we are ready to go further in suspending disbelief to enjoy the cartoon.
Levels.
There ain't much that's even vaguely plausible in Independence Day. The scriptwriters couldn't have taken anything they wrote seriously. Certainly not the dialogue. Certainly not the plot. There really are critics out there who wanted to talk about the Jew and the Black Man saving the planet as some symbolic turn in the demographic history of the United States. Really. They really wrote that.
This is a silly movie. It has really nice special effects. Things blow up good! People say silly things and defeat bad aliens from somewhere bad. And Data has funny hair and glasses.
You go "Wow!" at the special effects and "Hee Hee" at the silly plot and the silly dialogue and eat popcorn and drink $6.00 cups of over-sweet coca cola.
That's what this movie is for, and it does that job just fine. If you want plot, dialogue, character development . . . stay home.
Wiley Coyote draws the train tracks on the rock and Road Runner runs into the picture, down the tracks and into the tunnel.
Hee hee.

World peace has apparently been realized by the year 1997. However, a joint U.S./European space lab is in orbit and is capable of controlling climate anywhere on Earth. It only makes sense that this lab is the focus of those who would again want to gain control of the world and the forces of good. Will a flood be called forth that would rival that of biblical times?

In 1780 the British thought they had a stronghold on South Carolina, but guerilla activities helped to confuse Cornwallis as he squandered his strength chasing American forces across the area. The famous "Swamp Fox" Francis Marion understood the role of a guerilla force and proceeded to snap up, one by one, the British posts that Cornwallis had carefully set up in South Carolina. In this rewrite of history, "Swamp Fox" is transformed into the "Ghost," Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), widower and father of seven children. Another history rewrite takes place in the perception of slavery: slaves seem happy to serve their masters. In reality, in the South more than 10,000 African Americans supported the British forces and were relocated to Nova Scotia, Florida, Jamaica, and Africa at the end of the war. But if you are looking for rousing action and great special effects–and are willing to go along with the premise that the American Revolution was won because Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) led the guerrillas against the evil British (especially Col. William Tavington (Jason Isaacs))–then this movie will prove entertaining.
