At the same time, right-wing lawyer Roy Cohn (Al Pacino) is also dying of AIDS and is visited by the ghost of Ethel Rosenberg (Meryl Streep) who he had sent to the electric chair.

Memories of her turbulent childhood haunt her, and the stories, told through flashbacks, involve young Pippa (Blake Lively) living with her pill-popping mother (Maria Bello) and finally leaving home and living with her lesbian aunt in Manhattan. Pippa meets Herb, falls in love with him–despite the fact that he is married–and they later marry. As her memories take over Pippa's life, emotionally troubled, 35-year-old Chris (Keanu Reeves) moves into the neighborhood to stay with his mother (Shirley Knight). Chris, as well as Pippa's adulterous friend Sandra (Winona Ryder), step into Pippa's life and bring her salvation by helping Pippa find her true self.

While Steven was a successful real-estate broker, Jerry is a loser and drug addict. Audrey needs someone to turn to and invites Jerry to move in with her and her children (Alexis Llewellyn and Micah Berry). Jerry bonds with the family, and, despite their differences, Jerry and Audrey develop a mutual dependency on each other.
