  While running from a murder frame-up, Frank (John Ireland) meets Connie (Dorothy Malone) at a cafe. He takes Connie and her car on a cross-country race that will get him out of the country. But on the way, Connie works on him to turn himself in, and they fall in love. Eventually, Frank does the right thing and returns to clear his name.

But, when Marty's mother and friends criticize Clara, Marty does not call her–until he realizes that a loving relationship with Clara is more important to him than the relationships he shares with his friends and mother. The film received Academy Awards for Best Picture, Actor (Borgnine), Director, and Screenplay. Betsy Blair and Joe Mantell were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor.
